Davao cuisine photo tilt

[UPDATED: 28 May 2007]

It has always tickled my fancy to write about food. While I have attempted this a few times in the past, I don’t think I’ve really gotten into the thing yet. For one, I have very limited cooking experience, and I sure know close to nothing when it comes to recipes and such. But, I love good food! :D

In the meantime, why not a photography tilt that has food in focus? Specifically, photos of gastronomical experiences in Davao!

Davao’s hospitals

I have a Japanese friend who’s married to a Filipina, and she recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl. My friend, Naoki, has been in Davao for about 6 months now, and got to love the city so much he made a Japanese-language website about it. However, recently, he had a truly disappointing and disheartening experience with our medical services.

Travel agents now refuse credit cards

The Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) has reissued a warning against the tacking-on of additional charges to credit card purchases. The reason for DTI’s move is that, many stores — especially small retailers — pass on the 3-5% charge that credit card companies levy on merchants. According to our laws, this is illegal.)

Kanto Bar @ MTS

Whenever one of my Japanese friends invites me for a drink, he always asks to meet at one of the bars in Taboan, MTS. But the other night, he ‘discovered’ Kanto Bar, also at MTS. So last night, he asked that we meet there. I was pleasantly surprised at the major facelift that Kanto has undergone — actually they renovated more than a year ago already, but I hardly ever go to that part of MTS.

Damosa: Davao’s new commercial center

The Damosa area used to be a dusty, neglected-looking part of Davao, until recently. This part of Lanang was almost exclusively for warehouses and industrial-type buildings. When the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (Mindanao International College) along Mamay Road was established in 2002, its first batch of students found the area dreary and rather isolated. But things started happening a couple of years ago when the Damosa Gateway was put up.

Café Palma Gil

A client asked me to a meeting last week, at a coffee shop I hadn’t been to yet. It was all business so I wasn’t able to sample anything other than their house blend, though. So yesterday, during a lull in my schedule, I headed for Café Palma Gil to check it out in earnest.

La Toscana

When it comes to pizza, my favorite in Davao has always been Picobello (5/F Gaisano South). But my friend — who happens to be an excellent chef — upbraided me for my “uneducated tastes” (in his opinion), and claimed that the pizza offerings at La Toscana are much better. So to prove his point, off we went to that quaint-looking Italian bistro. I always see La Toscana whenever I pass through Quirino Ave., but the location just was never inviting enough. Until now.

Bankerohan Bridge is falling down

Just when things were starting to look up for Davao, the bridge falls. Literally. Gov. Generoso Bridge (more popularly known as Bankerohan Bridge), after serving Davao for decades, cracked under the weight of the city’s steadily increasing vehicular traffic. But, isn’t it supposed to be good for a few more decades? ••• Read on »

Summer is officially here!

After a couple of false starts since after February, I think I can safely say it’s officially summer now. Today, Easter Sunday, was a lot hotter than usual, although it surprised me to see that we had a high of only 35°C this noon. I don’t know about you guys, but I had 4 showers today!
