When I was in college, I had my ears pierced with tiny gold studs. If memory serves me right, I was the only guy in campus with both ears pierced. It was a statement, yes — aren’t all body ornamentations (rings, studs, tattoos, what have you) done to declare something to the world? For me, it was a way to say that I was comfortable with my own being.

Last Friday and Saturday, Andrew, Ria, Migs and I took Aileen (who’s more and more loving it in Davao) out for rounds in the city.
Friday, we attended Christopher Cubos’ “I.T. party” at Fwendz Diner. That was part of Chris’s efforts in reviving the Silicon Gulf initiative. There were I.T. professionals present, and plenty of students, which was a good sign that Chris’ initiatives will soon bear fruit. Read more »

While that overnight stay at Hof Gorei last weekend provided a welcome respite for me, the succeeding few days brought some of the stress back right away. Deadlines and hours in front of the computer left my back and neck screaming for release. So off to BodyBliss.
I could’ve gone to my usual and reliable massage clinic, but I thought I’d try this new place for a change. Thankfully, no regrets. BodyBliss — highly recommendable if you’d rather not spend too much on a good massage. No sauna or even showers at this place, though, but the treatment you get is satisfactory. Read more »

The Delirium party @ cups & lowercase was a hit! Awesome sounds by DJ Maxxie and the El Quinto Drumbeaters… free booze the whole entire night c/o San Miguel… dressed-to-kill girls and cool guys!! This is the modern and hip side of Kadayawan.
Viva hot babe Asia Agcaoili was a no-show… But who cares? We got more than enough eye candy in Davao already!
Kudos to Mau Abella and his gang for organizing the best gig of this year’s Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival. Hey Mau, we’re looking forward to more of that! Read more »

After a couple of false starts since after February, I think I can safely say it’s officially summer now. Today, Easter Sunday, was a lot hotter than usual, although it surprised me to see that we had a high of only 35°C this noon. I don’t know about you guys, but I had 4 showers today!

Being with a group of Manileño bloggers a couple of days made me realize that I overlook a few little things that make Davao such a livable place. The Japanese adjective is more apt: sumiyasui (easy to inhabit). Read more »

Happy 70th Araw ng Dabaw!!!
In Davao there are quite a number of various cuisines to get excited about. There are several European restaurants: Claude’s le Café de Ville (French); De Bonte Koe (the name’s Dutch, but what’s on the menu’s Euro fusion); Picobello (Italian); and a few more. There’s American… hmm… McDonald’s? Asian, of course: Tsuru, Mabo, Zakoya, etc. (Japanese); Twosome Palace, Korea Town, etc. (Korean); Hanoi (Vietnamese); Marco Polo’s Lotus Garden (Cantonese); etc.
But I’ve been asked: What really is Davao cuisine?

A new acquaintance gave me an idea to blog about: massage places in Davao. While we were engaged in conversation, Austin asked me about the best place in Davao to get a massage. I realized just then that there are actually quite a few now here. A colleague in the IT industry even opened a shop at the Matina Town Square.
You can differentiate massage services in Davao into roughly 3 categories: spas, or full-fledged services that offer more than just massages; massage clinics, where people go for no-fuss, no-frills body kneading; and home service. (Never mind the extra-service type — I have a GP rating here… well, sometimes R18, but not today
)

My previous post of a few minutes ago notwithstanding, I’d like to greet all those who are still in awe of the allure of puppy love: HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!
The best expression of LOVE that I’ve seen this year is written atop Marley’s place, and it reads:
When the power of love
overcomes the love of power
the world will know peace

My partner in crime Ian and I went out for a midnight snack right on the eve of Valentine’s Day. This is typical of people who think of Valentine’s dates as rather cheesy. But the truth is, seeing as we’re both single, we just had to make sure to get a night-out in before Valentine’s set in for real.
As usual, there were many people out and about. I’d come from Basti’s and met up with Ian at Bo’s Coffee, which is typically occupied by spring chickens, or the young and the restless. Good thing Ian had a sudden craving for breaded whatever, so blew that joint and headed to The Venue (there was a time when Davaoeño entertainment place owners had a penchant for generic names).
