Mr. WordPress in Davao

Matt Mullenweg, creator of this fantastic blogging software that powers AngDabawenyo.com, is in town for WordCamp. He arrived yesterday all the way from San Francisco via Manila, and will stay up to Friday. Even after such a long flight, he was up for a little stroll, so I took him around People’s Park.

At first, he was quite soft-spoken and seems very humble for a man of his standing. At least on the Internet, he is one of the most influential and easily-recognizable personalities around. It is good to know people like Matt — inspires a desire to reach out for the stars and yet stay grounded.

I asked him if he had any preconceived notions of Davao City. You see, I was surprised that he (nor his colleagues at Automattic.com) never asked me about security concerns. When I invited Matt to attend WordCamp in Manila and in Davao, the invitation was accepted without any apparent qualms.

Matt said some people actually did tell him that he might need a security team while in Davao! But he said he had checked it out. I guess he decided there was no risk. Good thing he’s here to find out for himself that Davao really is a progressive and peaceful city.

Here’s a photo of us having dinner with Matt — Bob & Feyma Martin, Ted Padova, Rodney Jao and Chattee Lara. We were at Ranchero Grill to treat Matt to barbecue Davao-style.
