The Cellar @ Swiss Deli
Swiss Deli, that chic European restaurant in Lanang, has recently completed renovations and now features extended dining space in a new wing. The al fresco area is also now much cooler, even during hot afternoons. Most importantly, Signor Romano Venuti has added a charming wine cellar at the basement of the new wing.
Last Wednesday night saw Rochelle Venuti, Ahbet, Miguel and me at The Cellar for a bottle of their house red. The Ventisquero Cabernet-Sauvignon Clásico is another product of Chile that I now enjoy — but I’m still holding on to the Sta Rita cabsav as my favorite red. The Ventisquero (2005) sells for Php361 per bottle. With its deep woody texture, it was perfect with the sausages and cold cuts that we had.
Swiss Deli’s Sausage Platter (Php295) includes grilled Hungarian, bratwurst, cervelat (which goes well with a milder red wine), and English beef banger. The Assorted Cold Cuts Platter (Php185) has salami, copa (my fave!), beef cured ham, and calamatta olives. All of these excellent meats are made or prepared by Swiss Deli, whose proprietors have also given Dabawenyos the Picobello Ristorante Italiano and Café Prego.
The Cellar offers an intriguing range of wine selections: from affordable yet gastronomically-acclaimed South American wines, to expensive French classics, such as the Le Petit Cheval Saint Emilion Grand Cru (2000). A mouthful and a pocketful at a cool Php10,250.50!
Signorina Rochelle recommends the Yalumba red, which is imported from Australia. The cabsav or the merlot costs Php839.50 per bottle, and you would certainly enjoy it with a serving of mild soft cheeses, such as Emmenthal (Php235 per 225g).
On 17 October 2007 (Wednesday), The Cellar will hold a Wine-Tasting event, from 7:00 PM. For reservations and inquiries, you can contact Swiss Deli on 234-0271.

Hi Blogie,
I enjoy reading all your blogs. Seems like your the king of Davao bloggers, ok maybe bob martin contends for this title too. Do you know if Swiss Deli carries prosciutto or pancetta and other italian cured meats? Also do you have other suggestions of where to buy wine? Selection at SM, Gaisano or NCCC seems to be just horrible. Anyway thanks for any help and good luck on the bloger’s summit.

@Allen O — Thanks very much!! Yes, I do believe Swiss Deli carries prosciutto and Italian cured meats. Do check the place out. You won’t regret it.
As for wines, I know of Angelo’s. It’s on Rizal Street, near Rizal Promenade. They have an excellent selection there. And by that I mean decent wines that are very affordable. For French, try Claude’s, they also have a cellar there. Another place with a kind of cellar that I’ve seen is the new Spanish resto in Damosa Gateway, Hola Española.

@mercedes — If you’re near Lanang, go to Swiss Deli and see their selections there.
Or, you can call Angelo’s (300-4577). They’re a distributor of wines here in Davao.
