An American lunch
Today my folks and I had a very enjoyable lunch with my friend, Bob Martin, and his family at their lovely home. The Martins were at our home some weeks ago and we treated them to Filipino fare. This time, we were treated to American cooking — Bob’s mother, Billie, described it as a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
The butterball turkey, which is available in grocery stores in Davao by the way, was really good! They had it prepared lechon-style at Lechoneros. I’m prefer white meat because it’s healthier, and not because it’s tastier — but the turkey breast was juicy.
We also had mashed potatoes, beans, yam and bread. I guess the yam was served in place of cranberry sauce. It went really well with the turkey! If I’d had more space in my tummy I’d have eaten twice as much of the turkey breast and yam….
Bob’s wife, Feyma, who hails from General Santos City, is an excellent cook. I loved the way she made the beans: it was string beans (or was it Baguio beans?) in a thin sauce that kept me asking for more. I don’t know how it was cooked so I can’t really describe it, but it was fantastic.
Oh and we also had pomelo salad. The fruit was mixed with onions, shrimp and other spices, all in vinegar. It was the perfect appetizer to open that rich meal.
Food is such a great catalyst for friendship, especially when it’s prepared as deliciously and lovingly as at the Martin’s home! Thanks for that lunch treat, Bob, Feyma and Billie!
