After a morning meeting, fellow bloggers Andrew, Marc and I found ourselves near Chimes, so we decided to have lunch at one of the restaurants there. Against someone’s better advice, I opted for the Banana Leaf Asian Cafe — but only because I hadn’t tried it there yet. It was a regrettable mistake.
Andrew had chicken pandan, and Marc a beef dish. Each said it was so-so. They were the lucky ones. It must’ve been my bad luck that the pork chops I ordered came with rice that tasted like… never mind. At first I didn’t notice the weird taste because the rice was covered in gravy. But when I had a spoonful of just rice… I almost hurled. I thought I’d eaten a bug!
The appetizer that I ordered was also a complete disaster. It was their roti canai — like fluffy pita bread, dipped in a peanut sauce or curry — and it tasted like the flour they used was a decade old. The aftertaste was horrid.
The place looks nice enough, and the service was efficient and courteous. It’s such a shame they didn’t pay as much attention to their food.

Wow, Blogie! Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I have always liked the food at Banana Leaf. I wonder if they have really gone down hill (I haven’t been there in months), or if you just hit it on a bad day. Either way, it’s not good!
Hi Bob. I’ve heard from others as well that Banana Leaf’s food was good. And yeah, I think they’ve gone downhill, judging by what some friends have told me. I do hope, though, that they shape up…
Dearie, you should have just gone to Tong Yang, just besided Banana Leaf. At a reasonable price, eat all you can shabu-shabu is delicious.
Yeah I’ve been to Tong Yang and I loved it there (review coming up in the very near future — after I go back there). In fact my companions wanted to go there, but since I hadn’t tried Banana Leaf yet… Like I said, my bad.
