Huli ka!

Took this photo while in a cab, just before the ramp of Bankerohan Bridge. By now we all know the traffic situation in that part of the city due to the impassability of Bankerohan Bridge I. And look! Right above these jaywalkers is a pedestrian overpass….
All over the city are posters proclaiming “Ang Dabawenyo, DCplinado!” (The Davaoeño is disciplined). I sure hope these people are more of the exception… Not!!
Look at that girl at the leftmost side of the photo: she looks like she’s strolling in the park or something.
By the time my taxi was able to get to the ramp, I’d counted 15 people jaywalking. And the overpass? I saw one old man using it.
This got me so incensed I decided to go to MTS to cool my head off. And for your benefit as well, here’s a much better picture to gaze at. Refreshing and idyllic, isn’t it? It’s at the park in back of the Matina Town Square.

Ug ngano man pud daw gi tanggal sa city government ang fence diha sa Bangkerohan?
I could remember way back then, it has a fence so market goers would have to use the pedestrian overpass.

Yeah I remember that fence. It was such an eyesore!! And an embarrassment — imagine, we’re like cows or sheep…. I don’t know why it was removed, or by whom.

That overpass itself is not passable because it is under repair, at the same time the bridge was condemned. These people trying to cross over the fence are mostly customers at the bankerohan public market. I pity them because I come there often and seeing some with their children with them cross-over the fence. Motorist should take consideration instead of letting them pass and not treating them as simply “jaywalkers”. But what the heck, most motorist don’t even respect pedestrians even along the pedestrian lane. They say in the Philippines it is hard to cross the street even if you use the pedestrian lane. I have been in the Netherlands and the moment I set foot on their pedestrian lane motorists simply stop and allowed me to cross, a Filipino I am at that.

Even when neither the bridge nor the overpass (the overpass is under repair??) was damaged, people have always been jaywalking there. Anywhere in Davao, in fact. You shouldn’t pity them because what they’re doing is, well, stupid. Imagine, bringing your children to do something that is illegal? Yes, motorists should also be considerate, but the way undisciplined drivers drive does not give pedestrians the excuse to jaywalk. This isn’t a chicken-and-egg problem: each one of us should correct our own mistakes, and then society will have become much improved!

Traveling to Davao this summer first timer, do you have more pictures of the city, sounds like a silly request but I am very curious, I know so little about Davao.

Hello Mike! Not, it’s not a silly request.
I don’t have many photos for posting yet, but as soon as I take new ones I’ll post them here! Thanks for dropping by!

hi blogie, i just came to davao for 2 months to work so I have been reading your site for places to try! Can you tell me how to find the coffee place that you just reviewed? and really, any suggestions at all for places to go! I just got here and I’m a bit lost and lonely, so I’d love some ideas about places to visit.

hello lisa! thanks for reading my blog!

did you mean Bruegger’s Cafe? if you take a cab, just ask the driver to bring you to Wheels n’ More Drive compound. if he doesn’t know that, tell him the place of Autoshop (it’s a disco inside the compound). The compound sits on the corner of J.P.Laurel Ave. and Palma Gil St. (the Palma Gil going inside Bo. Obrero, not the one by Apo View Hotel).
i’ll try to come up with more reviews here soon!
